Spirit Guide Saga (Part 1): WTF Jar-Jar Binks?

Communicating with spirit guides may sound glamorous, but for most people this skill requires exercise and discipline just like building any muscle. As in the beginning stages of learning any skill, spirit guide communication can be frustrating, humbling, and sometimes downright perplexing. This is a story about a humorous and strange encounter I’ve had on my way to re-bridging a connection with the spirit world, and the delightful insights that have come from it.

There he is again, in my peripheral third-eye vision. The one, the only: Jar-Jar Binks.

You know, Jar-Jar, the talking lizard person from Star Wars?

Apparently everyone on the internet hates Jar-Jar.

That’s okay, I don’t really know much about Star Wars either. I watched it a few times as a child, but I’m no fan-girl, nor do I remember the story arc with any clear definition. I definitely did not get excited when they began re-making Star Wars, creating the baby Yoda craze, all that jazz. I don’t watch new movies. I don’t watch TV. I don’t pay attention to that kind of thing.

But I’ve been gently forced to pay attention to this image that keeps appearing in my mind’s eye, which starkly resembles the lizard-person-esque Jar-Jar, because it keeps showing up, no matter how many times I’ve tried to push it aside. More than an image, actually: in the subtle discernment that I’ve been gradually developing, I can tell that this character is not just psychic imagery. It’s a spirit. A conscious being. It has a Soul, and a message, and it obviously wants to talk to me.

What the hell?

Communicating with spirit guides is a goal of mine. It is a very immediate intention I’m holding, in fact – to develop personal relationships with benevolent ancestors, animals, elementals, and extra-dimensional beings. It’s been a very interesting, and rather slow, journey of building trust with myself about who I’m seeing, what their intention is, how to hear them clearly without my mind intervening with projections, whether or not I’m imagining something or if it’s real, and whether or not they are actually my guides or just some random spirit who wants to get my attention.

Of course, some spirits are not exactly friendly or helpful. Some of them can be downright malicious, and I have definitely interacted with some of these beings. So it’s important to strengthen my energetic boundary, to state clearly what energies I will and will not allow near me. I do this in my morning yoga practice and throughout the day. I’m developing more discernment about which Archangel or animal guide is showing up at any given time, for instance, by their color, their shape, their location in my field, the way they feel, and the other hints they give me. Yet, some facts about this psychic communication work still evade me. One of them being: why the hell a Jar-Jar-looking spirit keeps knocking on my auric door, gently but consistently asking to be let in.

How can it possibly be that a Star Wars character has become a living, breathing spirit guide? Has the spirit of Jar-Jar liberated itself from fiction, and become a conscious entity with the capacity to speak to humans? It doesn’t make any logical sense. This character doesn’t even hold any significance for me, or apparently for anyone, other than being an infamously annoying Star Wars character.

If there’s anything that spiritual work has taught me, however, it’s that not everything that’s real needs to make logical sense. In fact, when exploring the spiritual realm, logic can be the enemy of discovery. So I stay curious. I remain patient; and when this Jar-Jar arrives at an opportune time, I inquire. Most of the time I get nothing.

Today was not one of those times.
